- Chemical Bonding: Ionic bond, Covalent bond, Metallic bond, Coordinate bond, Fajan’s rules, Resonance, VSEPR theory, Molecular orbital theory.
- Periodic Properties of Elements: Modern periodic table, s, p, d and f-blocks, Periodic trends in atomic and ionic radii, Ionization energy, Electron affinity, Electronegativity, Chemical reactivity.
- s-Block Elements: General properties of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals, Chemistry of Li, Na, K, Mg and Ca.
- p-Block Elements: General properties of boron family, carbon family, nitrogen family, oxygen family, halogens and noble gases, Chemistry of B, C, N, O, F, Cl and Ne.
Paper II: Physical Chemistry
- States of Matter: Gaseous state, Liquid state, Solid state, Intermolecular forces, Phase rule, Colligative properties.
- Thermodynamics: First law of thermodynamics, Second law of thermodynamics, Third law of thermodynamics, Entropy, Free energy, Chemical equilibrium.
- Chemical Kinetics: Rate of reaction, Factors affecting the rate of reaction, Collision theory, Transition state theory.
- Electrochemistry: Redox reactions, Electrochemical cells, Nernst equation, Concentration cells.
Paper III: Organic Chemistry
- Nomenclature of Organic Compounds: IUPAC rules of nomenclature for alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, cycloalkanes, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, ethers, carboxylic acids and esters.
- Isomerism: Structural isomerism, Stereoisomerism (geometrical isomerism and optical isomerism).
- Alkanes and Cycloalkanes: Preparation, properties and reactions of alkanes and cycloalkanes.
- Alkenes and Alkynes: Preparation, properties and reactions of alkenes and alkynes.
- Alcohols and Phenols: Preparation, properties and reactions of alcohols and phenols.
Practical
- Qualitative analysis of inorganic salts containing Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Ba2+, Pb2+, Cu2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Al3+, NH4+, Cl-, Br-, I-, SO42-, NO3-, CO32- and PO43-.
- Volumetric analysis: Acid-base titration, Redox titration.
- Organic synthesis: Preparation of ethane from bromoethane, Preparation of ethanol from ethyl chloride, Preparation of acetic acid from ethanol.
